September Books of the Month

by Dr. Z September 1 2010

Categories: Books of the Month

At Primrose Schools, we spend the entire month of September learning about children, music, animals and sports from around the world. We also host a culminating “Celebrating Cultures” event where children and families share what they have learned.

Peter Spier’s book, People, first published in 1988, is still one of the best ways to introduce children to the marvelous diversity that can be found in our world. The text and his wonderful illustrations show that "we come in many colors," with different-looking features and different ways of dressing.

He also shows that people around the world enjoy different things, have different personalities, live in different homes, speak (and write) different languages, have different pets, celebrate different holidays, and worship in different ways. It’s the kind of book that children will pick up often after it’s been read and spend time examining the pictures.

August Books of the Month

Starting school can be an exciting and daunting time for young children.  It’s the not knowing what to expect that can cause anxiety for children and even their parents. Several children’s authors have written sensitively about the subject and reading their books can help dispel some of the fear.  A book can also be just what it takes to start a conversation about what might be causing a child to worry.

Don't Go! by Jane Breskin Zalben is a perfect choice for younger children who are more likely to be experiencing separation anxiety in addition to worrying about a new environment and people.

When Daniel’s mother takes him to his big, unfamiliar classroom, he does not want her to leave. The author introduces typical preschool activities realistically and enticingly, and it’s no wonder that by the end of the day, Daniel greets his mother proudly with his accomplishments.

July Books of the Month

For July, I thought it would be great to share with you two books that focus on citizenship.  Independence Day celebrations can often ignite children’s interest in our country’s history, so it’s important to share stories with them beyond July 4th.

Adults and children alike will appreciate our flag’s history as told by Alexandra Wallner in her book, Betsy Ross.  The text clearly tells the story that has been handed down as part of our history about the role Betsy Ross played in the design and creation of America’s first flag.  The illustrations are so informative, you can choose as much of the text to read as you think your child is ready to understand.  Best of all, at the end of the book, there are directions for you and your child to make a five-pointed star.

June Books of the Month

Many favorite children’s books have parts that just beg to be acted out and provide perfect vehicles for children to engage with the story.  As soon as your child is able to “help” you read a story, you can also introduce the idea of acting it out. Folk and fairy tales are particularly suited for reenactment and help build children’s ability to sequence stories at the same time.

The author, Jan Brett, has retold and beautifully illustrated Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  Young children tend to identify with wee Baby Bear and love to recite his refrain when he sees the damage that has been done to his chair, porridge, and bed.
